05.2 - Single Link and Dual Link

Single Link DVI (and HDMI) is made up up three data pairs, and one clock pair. This is enough to handle 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p (1920×1080) for HDTV. However don’t forget that DVI was originally designed for the PC world, where resolutions continue to increase.
Dual Link DVI adds three more data pairs, which doubles the bandwidth. Displays like the Apple Cinema series have resolutions up to 2560×1600, and therefore require a dual link DVI source and cable.

HDMI has optional specifications that include dual link connections, however since 1080p is the foreseeable future of HDTV, it probably won’t be required for a long time. In other words don’t spend any extra money for dual link cables unless your dealing with computers.
